POPULATION DYNANMICS

Population dynamics is easily defined as; The change over a long or short period of time in which influences the change of organisms.

The new classification schema of the Sunda clouded leopard as a separate species has resulted in greater research efforts, especially in Borneo and Sumatra. These islands face some of the highest deforestation rates in the world, making field research and conservation efforts all the more valuable and timely (Clouded Leopard, 2009).

Clouded Leopards are less abundant range wide than when last accessed in 2007. Some range countries have maintained status for the Clouded Leopard abundance, however, the majority of range countries have experienced moderate declines, mainly noted for Myanmar, Viet Nam and China areas.

The causes of Clouded Leopard declines are attributed primarily because of the following;

  • Direct exploitation

  • Range fragmentation

  • Reduction in habitat quality

Clouded Leopard exploitation for pelts is well documented in several countries, such as the infamous Tachilek market along the Thai–Myanmar border. The frequency of Clouded Leopard parts available at market indicates increased pressure from hunting as previously mentioned (ICUN, 2000).

Decline of clouded leopards using graph (Glogster, 2016).
