MANAGEMENT OF SUB-CLIMAX COMMUNITIES

The management of sub-climax communities (Wetlands) is done for various objectives with the priority being to minimise any potential conflicts.
When arranging and managing sub-climax communities the needs of species and the community must be taken into consideration.

Management of sub-climax communities can be done by the following;

Dredging: Dredging is the removal of sediments and debris from the bottom of many wetlands. Such as lakes, rivers, harbours and other water constituents. This is a routine in which appears in waterways all over due to sedimentation – which is the natural process of sand and wilt washing downstream and which gradually fills channels and harbours.
It can also be put in place to manage and reduce the exposure of wildlife, fish and people to contaminants and to prevent the spread of contaminants to other areas of the water (Oceanic and Administration, 2013). It is ideal for this kind of method to be performed by hand and not with machinery to prevent damage to the community.

Education: Education is also key for a management plan, especially for of sub-climax communities, as majority of locals rely on their sub-climax community (mangrove) for protection and production.
Education will allow locals to become aware of future problems that could possibly occur if the management of the sub-climax is not controlled and maintained. These mangroves also boost up tourism to the area, particularly where endangered species are found.

Regular Monitoring: If regular monitoring is put in place to happen on a regular basis it should allow the sub climax communities to be under better control and managed appropriately. This will allow the scientists who is observing to ensure that there is a gradual process of change occurring and how long the changes are taking to possibly occur which enables areas to be highlighted to help at its best to manage for future development.

Removal of unwanted vegetation: Again as with other management strategies, this method should ideally be carried out by hand to prevent unnecessary accidental damage to the community. Unwanted vegetation not benefiting the sub-climax community. If unwanted vegetation is removed, it prevents the sub-climaxes developing into a climax. During the removal of vegetation, the method of how to remove vegetation should be done by hand and the use of heavy equipment should be avoided as they can result in the disturbance of the

community, disturbance of nests and also affecting those animals which are hibernating.

Planting: Planting may be a process of firstly removing unwanted plants and then replacing them with desired plants. The planting of desired vegetation may be done through a government lead scheme to increase the sub-climax community. This kind of work may be easily done with the use of voluntary work.
